I’ve been waiting all winter for this egg.

My chickens are Australorps, and able to withstand cold temperatures (not that it was that cold this winter, anyway), and even continue laying well into the winter.

But it’s been months without eggs from them; we continue to feed them, give them treats, talk to them (and sometimes scold them). Some days, it seems like a wasted effort, until today.

Today, I collected the first egg in months. It’s remarkable how things in our lives overlap. Areas of my own life have felt like this: putting so much work into something and not seeing any outcome. Not even feeling a glimpse that the effort is worth it.

And then, out of the blue, an egg.

I haven’t collected any “eggs” in the challenging areas of my life yet, but in the words of Alexandre Dumas, “Wait and hope.”
